Winter tournament and Annual Prizegiving

Come along from 2.30pm on August 8th and join in for a game of mixed doubles (partners to be chosen on the day). The theme is anything but white for a ‘non-Wimbledon theme’, though this doesn’t apply to footwear of course. Then immediately after, we’ll honour those illustrious souls who shone in the recent club champs with a BBQ/party/BYO plate of something mid winter social bash. It’s been a while since we all got together and the Prizegiving is as good a time as any. Entry is just $5 per person on the door and this will put you in the draw for up to $250 worth of great prizes. Don’t miss it!

Tournament 2.30pm to 5pm

Our Annual General Meeting will be held Sunday 25th July in the clubhouse at 1.30pm. All members are welcome to attend as we review the current year and look forward to the next.

Coach of the Year – Wild!

Congratulations to our very own Vicky Wild for being named Coach of the Year last night (17 May) at the Tennis Northern awards ceremony. Plus she was also part of the Women’s Doubles team that took out the Chelsea Cup. Well done Vicky, you’ve earned it for all the hard work you’ve brought to the club.

On the same night, Ngataringa Life Member Raewyn Rumble was also honoured with a large bouquet of flowers. Raewyn recently retired as Auditor for the Tennis NZ Executive Committee after many years service, at the same time as she’s been Ladies Club Captain for our own club. Now that’s dedication.

Club Champs Glory!

It has to be said, though long in length because Easter intervened, that was one of the best Club Championships we can recall. Not only was the weather glorious for the entire event, there were many close games and quite a few upsets too. Conor Colier’s comeback win against Ben Davies in the Men’s Singles semi is worth noting, while the Men’s Doubles semi-finals with Ian Tucker and Clive Curry out-foxing their younger and far more fancied opponents (Ben Davies and Jonno Lynch) with a game of precision lobbing and dogged persistence, will long remain in the club’s annals as one of the big surprises. Sadly, they were not destined to win the final, but it was close run thing nonetheless!

High praise should go to Club Captain Peter Restall and Committee member Raewyn Rumble for organising the event, and thanks to all those who turned up to play, and of course to watch.

The winners of the main draw and Plate will be announced shortly.

Junior Club Champs 2010

We had a fantastic Junior Club Champs on Sunday 18th April – the weather held out, there was great sportsmanship shown by the players, and the parents, family members and coaches watching on the sidelines were greatly entertained by some excellent tennis. A huge thank you goes out to all who played, the older Juniors who came to help bright and early and of course to the many parents who put aside their time to help out on the day. Court resurfacing et al

Just in case you hadn’t noticed, Courts 1 & 2 are getting a bit long in the tooth, and Court 5 needs some TLC. So that is what’s happening. Two updated quotes have been received as of today (April 8th) and we will now be applying for a grant to cover 50% of the cost. If successful, we should be good to go ahead after the Club Champs have been completed, or there abouts. It’s been a long process, so thank you for your patience in getting this sorted, but we know you’ll appreciate the new surface when it’s laid.

It’s also taken a while to get some of the renovation work done to the clubhouse, but that also is in the process of attracting some much needed funding, for painting and general improvements to the old kitchen downstairs (we already have a great one upstairs) and to the Coaches office space. And let’s not forget the old BBQ – that thing needs to come out of the clubhouse and into a shed of its own, at the very least for safety reasons.

It had to happen. At last, Roger woke up and realized where his true allegiance lay. Not to the hallowed halls of Wimbledon, but to us – via Vicki, our illustrious head club coach. Seriously though, Vicki returned from the Australian Open with her very own signed memento and, we hear, a handshake with the Fed himself. Apparently he’s “gorgeous!”

Everyone survived Alan's cooking.

Once a year we open our doors to anyone wishing to get into Tennis. It’s a nationwide campaign led by Tennis NZ and Tennis Northern, this being the second time we’ve participated. Loads of families turned up and many joined, which can only be good for the club. So thanks to the committee for lending a hand and well done the coaches for agreeing to throw in a free lesson on the day.
